In recent years, Shanghai has been accelerating its pace to adopt innovation-driven and transformational development model. Dedicated efforts have been made to facilitate the development of convention and exhibition industry onto a fast track of growth. In 2016, the exhibitions of all kinds held in Shanghai saw growth both in number and total exhibition area by 30.56% and 68.63% respec – tively, compared with the year of 2011. In terms of the number and area of exhibitions, Shanghai is No.1 in China and top-ranked in the world at large. Four major features have been observed upon the develop – ment of the industry:
Firstly, exhibition scale grows year by year. In 2016, the city hosted 880 exhibitions of all kinds, increasing by 3.41% year on year. The exhibition area amounted to 16.0708 million square meters, up by 6.22% year on year. 38 large exhibitions with area exceeding 100 thousand square meters have been held, growing by 18.75% year on year, and the exhibition area totaled at 6.775 million square meters with a year-on – year growth of 23.6%, accounting for 42.16% of the total exhibition area held over the same period in Shanghai.
Secondly, Shanghai sees stronger capacity to hold exhibitions. The city is home to 9 professional exhibition venues equipped with accessible exhibition area of nearly 1 million square meters, leading all the other global exhibition hubs. Meanwhile, Shanghai is the only city in China that hosts 2 mega-sized exhibition venues with indoor area of over 200 thousand square meters. In 2015, Shanghai New International Expo Center saw 27 turnovers of exhibi – tion halls and National Exhibition and Convention Center had 10 turnovers. These two major exhibi – tion venues successfully attracted 14 million exhibitors and visitors. Thirdly, exhibitions are increasingly international. In 2016, Shanghai hosted 287 international exhibitions in total, decreasing by 1.71% year on year. The total exhibition area of these international exhibitions totaled at 11.7747 million square meters, growing by 4.75% year on year and accounting for 73.27% of the city’s total exhibition area. Shanghai leads the whole nation by having 20 exhibi – tion projects that are certified by UFI. In addition, top 10 international exhibition companies have all set up branch offices in Shanghai.
Fourthly, Shanghai sees stronger industry dynamism. With the support of the Ministry of Commerce of China, Shanghai pioneered the efforts to launch the reform on approval system of international exhibitions in 2014, transforming substantial approval into a symbolic one. A public informa – tion service platform for exhibition industry has been established. The measures have effectively inspired market dynamism and attracted a great number of domestic and foreign renowned exhibition companies and quality exhibitions to the city. The international exhibitions held by not-locally registered companies accounted for 1/4 of the interna – tional exhibitions that took place over the same period of time.
